One of the most popular modifications for pre-1995 OBS trucks is swapping in the updated 1995-1998 dashboard. The newer dash features a more centralized radio location, improved HVAC controls, and a cleaner gauge cluster layout.
Here's what you need to know before you start.
First, source your parts. You'll need the complete dash assembly, wiring harness, gauge cluster, HVAC controls, and the radio bezel. Buying everything from a single donor vehicle is the easiest approach β consistency matters.
The swap itself is straightforward but time-consuming. Plan for a full weekend if it's your first time. The dash pad, gauge cluster, and HVAC box all need to come out of the donor and go into your truck.
Wiring is where people get tripped up. The 95+ harness uses a different connector for the gauge cluster and HVAC. You have two options: splice into your existing harness, or swap the entire dash harness. The full harness swap is cleaner but takes longer.
The gauge cluster from 95+ trucks includes a tachometer on V8 models, which is a nice bonus if your older truck didn't have one.
Pro tip: while you have the dash apart, this is the perfect time to install sound deadening material, replace any cracked defroster ducts, and upgrade your speakers.
The end result is a dramatically improved interior that looks and feels a decade newer while maintaining the OBS character.
