Brake Upgrade Guide: Rear Disc Conversion for C10 Trucks

If your C10 or OBS truck still runs rear drum brakes, a disc brake conversion is one of the most impactful safety upgrades you can make. Modern disc brakes offer better stopping power, more consistent performance in wet conditions, and significantly easier maintenance.

The conversion kit typically includes new rotors, calipers, brackets, brake lines, and all necessary hardware. Quality kits are designed to bolt directly onto your existing axle without any welding or fabrication.

Installation takes about 3-4 hours per side for a first-timer. You'll need basic hand tools, a floor jack, jack stands, and a brake bleeding kit. No special tools required.

Step one: remove the old drum assembly. This includes the drum, shoes, hardware, and backing plate. Clean everything while it's apart.

Step two: install the new caliper bracket onto the axle flange. This is where fit matters β€” a quality kit will align perfectly without any filing or modification.

Step three: mount the rotor, install the caliper, and connect the new brake line. Torque everything to spec.

Step four: bleed the entire brake system. Start from the wheel furthest from the master cylinder and work your way forward.

The difference in braking performance is immediately noticeable. Your truck will stop shorter, straighter, and with more confidence. Combined with fresh front brakes and quality brake fluid, you'll have a stopping system that matches modern vehicles.

All conversion kits in our vault are fitment-verified for specific year ranges. Check the product listing for your truck's compatibility.
