Understanding OBS Truck VIN Codes: Decode Your Build

Every OBS truck tells a story through its Vehicle Identification Number. Learning to read your VIN unlocks valuable information about your truck's original configuration, which is essential for ordering the right parts.

The VIN is a 17-character code located on the driver's side dashboard, visible through the windshield. Here's what each section means for GMT400 trucks.

Positions 1-3 identify the manufacturer. 1GC means Chevrolet truck built in the USA. 1GT means GMC truck.

Position 4 indicates the gross vehicle weight rating. K is for half-ton (1500), and higher letters indicate heavier ratings.

Position 5 tells you the model line. C means two-wheel drive, K means four-wheel drive.

Positions 6-7 indicate the body style. 10 is a half-ton, 20 is three-quarter ton, 30 is one-ton.

Position 8 is the engine code. This is crucial for parts ordering. Z typically indicates the 5.7L V8, while other codes represent the 4.3L V6, 6.5L diesel, and other options.

Position 10 is the model year. R is 1994, S is 1995, T is 1996, and so on.

Position 11 is the assembly plant.

Positions 12-17 are the sequential production number.

Knowing your VIN means you can verify exactly which parts are correct for your specific truck. No more guessing on engine codes, gear ratios, or brake configurations. When you order from Elite Car Components, we cross-reference your VIN data to ensure perfect fitment.
