Cooling System Overhaul: Keep Your OBS Running Cool

Overheating is the number one killer of OBS truck engines. The good news is that a complete cooling system overhaul is straightforward and relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of a blown head gasket.

Start with the radiator. If your truck has the original plastic-tanked radiator and it's showing any signs of age — discoloration, weeping at the tank seams, or reduced cooling capacity — replace it. A 3-row aluminum radiator is the gold standard upgrade.

Next, add a proper fan shroud and electric fan setup. The stock mechanical fan works but robs horsepower and isn't as efficient at low speeds or idle. A 16-inch electric fan with a proper shroud moves more air when you need it most.

Replace all coolant hoses while you're in there. Rubber hoses deteriorate from the inside out — they might look fine on the outside while being ready to blow. Use molded hoses designed for your specific year truck.

Don't forget the thermostat and water pump. A stuck thermostat is one of the most common causes of overheating, and a water pump with a worn impeller won't circulate coolant effectively even if everything else is new.

Finally, flush the entire system and fill with fresh coolant mixed to the proper ratio for your climate. Use a quality coolant that's compatible with your engine's materials.

A properly overhauled cooling system will keep your OBS running at optimal temperature for years. All cooling components in our vault are verified to fit specific year ranges.
